Two ways to get your Medicare

Everyone starts with Original Medicare: Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical). From there, most people choose one of two paths.

Original Medicare, plus a Supplement

You keep Original Medicare and can see any doctor in the country who takes Medicare. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan helps pay the deductibles, copays, and coinsurance Medicare leaves to you. Drug coverage comes from a separate Part D plan.

How Supplements work

Medicare Advantage

A Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) comes from a private company that contracts with Medicare. It must cover the medically necessary services Original Medicare covers, usually includes drug coverage, and has a yearly limit on what you pay out of pocket. Most plans use a network of doctors.

Plans can change their costs, networks, and drug lists every year. By September 30, your plan mails an Annual Notice of Change. Then, from October 15 to December 7, you can switch plans for the next year.

If you are on a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one more chance to change from January 1 to March 31.
